Thursday 21st June – period 4

Went over reaction of metals with acid. When a metal reacts with an acid a salt + hydrogen is produced.

Mg + 2HCl → MgCl2 + H2

as an ionic equation

Mg(s) + 2H+Cl(aq) → Mg2+(Cl)2(aq)  + H2(g)

remove the spectator ions

Mg(s) + 2H+(aq)  → Mg2+(aq)  + H2(g)

Preparation of sodium chloride

20ml of hydrochloric acid were neutralised with sodium hydroxide – noted when universal indicator solutions was green

Activated charcoal was added to remove the green colour

The activated charcoal was then removed by filtering

The sodium chloride was obtained by evaporating off the water

This resulted in a white powder – sodium chloride

NaOH + HCl ? NaCl + H2O
